What is the Wonderlic?

The Wonderlic test is a 12 minute 50 question test that is designed to be a quick gauge of cognitive ability. Many people consider the Wonderlic a shortened IQ test with similar questions. The test itself has been around since the 1920s, and the NFL has been using it as a part of the NFL Combine since the 1970s.

The average score of the Wonderlic is designed to be about 20, and a very small percentage of people score over 35 on the test. Take a look at this distribution of scores and you’ll quickly see that scores for various professions range from around 14-32.

While that may seem like low numbers, consider that test takers only have about 14 seconds to answer each question. Calculators are not allowed, and most test takers struggle to complete the entire test in time.

While many NFL players take the Wonderlic, not all active NFL players have recorded scores. Players like Tony Romo or Kurt Warner who went undrafted or were not invited to the NFL Combine would have never taken the Wonderlic and do not have recorded scores.

About Josh Allen

The 6-5, 233 pounds 4th year Junior out of Wyoming is the biggest quarterback in this year’s NFL draft and very much resembles Ben Rothlesburger or Carson Wentz in terms of presence in the pocket. Just take a look at his arm strength in this highlight reel:
